From June 24 to September 13 2015, The Palais de Tokyo shows the Tianzhuo Chen’s first solo exhibition in France (born in 1985, living in Beijing, China). Tianzhuo Chen is one of the most promising artists of his generation.
Tianzhuo Chen (born in 1985) lives in Beijing, China. He got a license in graphic design at Central St Martins College of Art and Design in 2009, and a Master of Fine Arts at Chelsea College of Arts, UK in 2010.
Through a colorful imagery, grotesque and kitsch dominated by direct visual references to drugs, wave queer hip-hop, the culture of the London rave, Japanese butoh, voguing in New York and the universe fashion, the Tianzhuo Chen’s works are intimately linked to the finding of a collapse of moral representations and beliefs. If the characters staged by Tianzhuo Chen area of a strange character familiarity is that they reflect, by exaggerating, ridicule our daily invaded by images of celebrities of our time. Their actions make up a new mythology, set themselves up as new belief systems, whose followers sometimes evolve into blind worshipers.
For his exhibition at the Palais de Tokyo, Tianzhuo Chen designs a set of unpublished works, including a performance with the artist and dancer Beio and Parisian collective House of Drama. Combining painting, drawing, installation, video and performance, they integrate various religious symbols to iconographic elements from towns urban subcultures in a globalized youth.
